The most common way they forecasted sales was to set a new business revenue goal for the year. Assign a quota to a sales rep. Then multiply the quota by the number of sales reps it would take to produce our new business goal.
At our peak, we doubled our team size from 15 sales reps to 30 within 6 months. And we missed our number big time. We wasted millions of dollars on unproductive sales reps and sales operations personnel.
From then on, we forecasted sales differently. We always started with the marketing forecast to calculate how many leads we expected to generate for the sales team. Then hired against that plan.
