When I hired my first sales rep, I did not use a sales hiring assessment template, but I wish I had. Hiring a bad sales rep is reported to cost a B2B SaaS company anywhere from $50,000 - $120,000. This of course depends on how long it took you to hire them, train them and then ultimately fire them. And how high value the employee is to the business. The more senior, the more expensive.
As I was researching how to hire sales reps, I came across various sales hiring assessment tests and inside sales hiring assessment tools. While none of them met my specific needs, I did find Mark Roberge’s book “The Sales Acceleration Formula.” In the book, he describes how they took a data driven approach to hiring sales reps at Hubspot. Eventually scaling their sales organization to hundreds of sales reps.
That inspired me to build a template for evaluating multiple sales candidates, and determining who was the best person to hire for the job.

Once I started using this template, I was able to sift through hundreds of resumes, interview candidates and identify the A-players for our sales team. Within 3 years, we grew our annual revenue from $2 million to $18 million. That’s exciting growth. I only wish I had the framework sooner to make even better hiring decisions earlier. We could have allocated capital that much more efficiently.
